Name: cultivars of rose of Sharon (shrub althea) (E); altheastruik (D); hibiscus syriacus (althaea frutex) (L)
Family: malvaceae

Physical Characteristics: deciduous shrub growing at a medium rate; height 1.5-3 m; flowers ~10 cm
Origin: E. Asia; locally naturalized in S. Europe
Flowering time: from July-September, seeds ripen in October
Habitat: wild on mountain slopes, original habitat obscure

Comments: in parks and gardens all over W. Europe, prefers sun or semi-shade and moist soil. Tea is made from leaves or flowers.
Two cultivars are shown: 'Woodbridge' and 'Oiseau Blue'
